After you have found the KW's you want to target and have developed
your pages, the next step is getting your site found and spidered.
Need to do keyword research?
or page development?
So you have a website full of great content that you want to share
with the rest of the world, problem is... the site is not listed
in any of the search engines. If you're not listed in the search
engines it's hard to get any traffic to the site, therefore you
have to get indexed. Luckily you're reading this, so you're on the
right path. It's quite simple to get indexed, all you need is links
from other sites. That's right... links. Don't pay to have your
site submitted to "1000's of search engines", don't even
submit your site to search engines for free... It's a waste of time.
If you do make it into the index, (most times you will not) a lot
of times the search engines will drop your site if you don't have
links pointing to it. What you need to do is get links. The first
place to go is the Open
Directory Project. This is the best directory on the internet
and you need to get your site listed there. Find the category that
best fits your website and take time when you submit your site,
make sure you follow the rules, especially the ones about only submitting
to one category and writing a description that is not full of hype.
You do not want your site banned from the ODP. Unfortunately this
process can take quite a while, because the sites are processed
by humans who volunteer. You could consider becoming an editor to
get your site submitted, but I don't suggest that unless you are
truely willing to be an editor after your site has been added. Another
big directory is the Yahoo!
directory. Unfortunately this one requires a $300 annual fee
to be listed if you have a commercial site, but they guarantee they
will review your site within 7 business days. There are numerous
other directories some being free, others having a fee. Find them,
submit your site and move on. Here is a good listing
of directories and their prices. The next place to get easy
links is in forums that are spidered and allow users to have signatures.
Our forum is a great place
for this. There are tons of forums out there so find a few that
you are interested in and start posting. Another way to get links
is by setting up reciprocal links pages. Basically you find websites
that will link to you in exchange for you linking to them. Try to
get the sites that rank high for the KWs you are targetting to link
to you because these type of links seem to be valued more than links
on non-relevant sites. Once you have a few links pointing to your
site it is only a matter of time before your site will start showing
up in the SE's. Next is considering how links can help your rankings.
One of the most important (Probably the most important) parts of
SEO is getting links and in particular links with your KWs in the
anchor text. For example a link like fantasy
football has "fantasy football" as the anchor text
and will help my favorite fantasy football site, The Fantasy Football
Jungle, rank better for the KWP fantasy football. A link is like
a vote from one site for another site. If a lot of sites link to
your site it says "theoretically" that you have a good
site. Natural linking is by far the best way to get links. The idea
is that the content you have is so good that other sites want to
link to yours because it adds value to their users experience. This
is the best way because they don't require reciprocal links nor
do they require your time other than creating the content that is
so great. In the begining of a website natural linking can be quite
difficult, mainly because not too many people know about your site.
In this case you have to be more aggresive. Go and get reciprocal
links, keep posting in forums where you can show a signature with
your links in it, and keep trying to figure out ways to get more
links. The link campaign can be tedious and very time consuming,
but eventually you will start ranking for some of your keywords
and some natural linking might start. Once that happens your life
gets a little easier!
Page Rank (PR) is a term that comes up a lot when talking about
links. It was first introduced by Google as a ranking of importance
and is on a logarithmic scale ranging from 0-10. You get PR from
pages that link to you and you give PR to pages that you link to.
Not all links are equal. If you somehow managed to get Yahoo! to
link to you from their home page your PR would jump to an 8 or 9.
If you somehow managed to get a link from me on this page you would
probably have a PR of 4 or 5. You can see your PR and the PR of
all other pages by downloading the Google
toolbar. You can compare your PR to that of your competitors
and see what you have to do to compete with them. We have created
a PR chart
that shows you approximately how many links are needed from pages
with a particular PR to achieve a particular PR. It's important
not to get fixated on the PR of pages. Get links from pages even
if their PR is not that great if the content matches the content
of your site.
If you have a site or forum that is fairly busy, a fabulous way
to get links is to sign up for the COOP
Ad network over at Digital Point Solutions. The idea of this
network is that you give text ad space on your site and you get
text ads put on many different URLs with the anchor text that you
choose. This network has helped numerous people achieve good results
for KWs they are targetting. The amount of your ads that are shown
depends on a few different things: The number of pages you have
indexed in Google, your PR, the number of outbound links on your
pages, etc. So, if you have a decent sized site you will get in
return a decent amount of quality links.
After you have you site found and spidered you then have to track
your site and fine tune accordingly.
