The first step in any successful search
engine optimization campaign is to do smart keyword analysis. The
key word there is smart! There are keywords that yield huge numbers
of searches and there are keywords that do not. Obviously you want
to find the keywords (KWs) that actually get searched on. The first
valuable tool that you should get to know and love is the keyword
suggestions tool over at Digital Point Solutions. This tool allows
you to query two sources to see the number of searches that have been
done for any particular KW. The two sources are Overture and Wordtracker.
The tool also shows stems of the word and suggestions for KWs similar
to the searched KW. An example search is the following for the KW
"keyword" (since these are the words we are targetting with
this page).

As you can see from the results, the values and searched KWs shown
are different for Wordtracker and Overture. It is generally thought
that the keyword stems shown by Wordtracker are the ones you can
trust. Wordtracker shows plurals of words where Overture does not,
also the order of multi word keyword phrases (KWPs) are correct
for the Wordtracker search, while they are not correct for Overture.
The Overture results are still useful as long as you keep those
points in mind when looking at the results. Now that you have a
list of KWs and KWPs it is time to choose which ones to target with
your search engine optimization efforts. This is sort of a tricky
and time consuming task, but if done properly from the beginning
the results will be well worth the time.
When you started your website you probably had a reason to do it
(hopefully!). Your goal might have been to sell something, to share
information, to start an online forum, etc. A big part of making
any of these types of sites work is to supply your site with targeted
traffic. Targeted traffic is traffic that would be interested in
the topics of your web site. You want people who come to your site
to be interested in what you offer. This is where a lot of thought
has to be made. Say you started a website on how to get websites
ranked higher for particular keywords. This is a favorite hobby
of yours and you feel that you are an expert, which qualifies you
to give advice on how to do this. When you look at the Wordtracker
list you see right off the bat the KW "keywords" gets
searched 491 times a day. Wow!, that's a lot of traffic. After you
find a keyword that is searched often you have to look at the competition
that is on the web for that particular KWP. This is where SEOGeeks.com
will make your life a little easier. If you look on the left side
bar you will see a link to our Keyword
Analysis Tool. This tool gives you a value we call the Keyword
Competition Indicator or KCI for any KW you put in. It also gives
important information on the first 10, 20 or 30 sites that Google
displays in its search results. For example if you put in the KW
"finding keywords" the resulting table you see is as follows

The graphics are a little nicer for the real thing but this gives
you an idea of what kind of output this tool gives. This shows the
URL's of the top 10 sites, the number of links to each URL as shown
by Google, the number of links for the domain as shown by Yahoo!,
the PR of the page, the allinanchor:KWP ranking, the inanchor:KWP
ranking and the no. of pages in each of the top 10 sites as shown
by Google. It also shows the very cool KCI value. With time you
will be able to evaluate these numbers and say if a decent ranking
is achievable given the size and the number of links your site has.
Also, check out the Website
Analysis Tool, which will give you a better understanding of
your sites' strength.
Now you decide whether or not you should target this KWP. If you
think you can get a good ranking put it on your list of targeted
KWP's, otherwise skip it until your site is a little more "powerful".
You should go through this process for any of the KWP's that show
up using the keyword suggestions tool. After sorting through many
of these KW's you will find ones that you feel you will be able
to get decent rankings for and that will provide a decent amount
of targeted traffic to your website. Once you have this list in
hand you should proceed to step 2: The development
of your pages.
